Thanks to the Embassy of Ireland for inviting NetworkIrlande members to participate in an extremely interesting address by Professor Barry O’Sullivan, Fellow and former President of the European AI Association (EurAI), on the morning of January 23rd.
Professor O'Sullivan outlined the time, thought and approach that went into the development of the EU AI Act, discussing the EU's approach to ethics, how it varies from that of other countries such as the USA and China, and the notion of trustworthy AI.
We learned that there are three distinct groups in terms of values across the world and so it is difficult to set global standards for AI because not everyone shares the same values.
Discussion moved to the use of AI in the military and current trends and recent developments in the United States which will have an impact going forward.
Questions and answers in the room and over breakfast covered a vast range of related topics and everyone left the event with a lot of food for thought!
